Ben Long Frescos Featured at Montreat College Exhibition

Montreat College President and Mrs. William W. Hurt hosted the opening of the Ben Long exhibition of fresco studies for The Return of the Prodigal fresco mural on June 11 in the Hamilton Gallery at Montreat College, Montreat, NC. The exhibition will continue through Sept. 11.

This special evening featured the installation at the gallery of more than forty-five drawings and paintings by Long, developed during the arduous process of creating Long's twenty-second fresco, The Return of the Prodigal, located in the Chapel of the Prodigal at Montreat College. The opening of the exhibition was combined with a public viewing of The Return of the Prodigal fresco at the chapel.

Art historian Dr. Francis V. O'Conner, New York, whose essay accompanies the exhibition literature, refers to Long's approach to true fresco, and The Return of the Prodigal "An authentic mural, as opposed to a mere wall embellishment, always defines the purpose of its environment. Here, Ben Long took a familiar biblical story of sin and redemption, and an old, but permanent, mural technique, and joined them in a movingly portrayed and elegantly composed pictorial drama."

Long's distinguished career as a painter, draftsman, and true fresco muralist, places him prominently among the notable living artists working in the figurative genre. Long teaches on the faculty at Montreat College as the Hamilton Gallery Artist-in-Residence.
