Tidwell Art Gallery in Charleston, SC, Offers Zhang Exhibit

The Tidwell Art Gallery in Charleston, SC, is offering as its Millennium exhibition a 10th Anniversary Exhibition by Christopher Z.Y. Zhang. The exhibit will be on view through Jan. 31, 2000.

As a gifted, young and still largely unknown artist, Zhang first came to Charleston ten years ago. Since then, his talent and his growing body of work have been recognized as a strikingly original and new contribution to the American art scene. In this exhibition, Zhang once again displays his remarkable synthesis of Western painting traditions and the ancient cultural legacy he brought with him from China. He returns to a recurring theme in much of his work, the eloquent faces of China's ethnic minorities and scenes from their timeless rural life styles.

During this 10th Anniversary Exhibition Zhang also reveals his fascination with the patterns and expressive grace of American ballet dancers. Either the ballerinas or scenes of Chinese ethnic minorities vividly present the aestheticism of Western realism as well as Chinese lyricism.

The Shanghai born artist, who now lives in New England came to the United States shortly after the Tiananmen Square massacre. He began his formal training in art at Chinese schools, which were influenced by 19th-century Russian realism. His teachers were taught by Russians and they instructed him that style.
