USC-Spartanburg Features Works by Thomas A. Tucker

An exhibition of photographs by local artist Thomas A. Tucker, will be on display at the Art Gallery in the Performing Arts Center on the University of South Carolina - Spartanburg campus, in Spartanburg, SC. The exhibition opens on Nov. 5, with a lecture by the artist in room 120 at 4pm. The exhibit will continue through Dec. 10.

Tucker, a Spartanburg native, was educated in Spartanburg City Schools. Taught by Raymond Floyd and MacArthur Goodwin at Carver High School, he received a B.A. degree in Art from Berea College, Berea, KY, and continued his education at the University of South Carolina and Furman University. Tucker's work has been exhibited throughout the state of SC, and his photographs appear in The Hub City Anthology, published in 1996.

Tucker has been teaching in the public school system for 25 years, and currently teaches art at R.P. Dawkins Middle School. A 1992 recipient of the "Middle School Art Educator of the Year Award", Tucker has also been chosen as Teacher of the Year 5 times. In addition to teaching in the school system, He has volunteered with the Spartanburg Arts Council, presented workshops, and taught drawing at the Spartanburg Art Museum School. The artist has also painted religious murals in two Baptists churches, one in Roebuck, SC, and one in Middletown, KY.

Tucker considers himself an art history buff and philosopher, who has professionally pursued painting, drawing, and printmaking, as well as photography, for many years. Tucker's current show Creating with Light, is an excellent example of his technical skill as a photographer and artistic sensitivity to composition, subject matter, and use of light.
