Downtown Beaufort, SC, Gallery Walk, Fall 2000
The pleasant coolness of the fall weather, a weekend filled with historic home and garden tours and galleries filled with color, light and textures - it must be time for the semi-annual Gallery Walk in Downtown Beaufort, SC, Sat., Oct.21 from 5 to 7:30pm. Come and stroll downtown and visit nine featured galleries offering special exhibits and light refreshments.
Bay St. Gallery at 719 Bay St will be presenting original paintings of Lana Hefner and Sandra Baggette, and the sculpture of Taylor Nicole Turner. The gallery's featured artist will be Jim Draper who will be present to discuss his paintings. Hefner's exhibit will include paintings from a recent trip to Vermont and Maine as well as her newest explorations of dynamic skies of the Lowcountry. Current work can be seen on (www.lanahefner.com). Baggette's current series Flowers from the Garden reflects a new direction in portraying light and color discovered during recent plein air painting in Idaho and Vermont. These can be viewed at (www.sandrabaggette.com). Turner's Lowcountry sculptured figures celebrate area people and traditions. These pieces are one-of-a-kind fired clay, finished with a bronze-like painted patina. Draper, who lived in Beaufort from 1982-1988, has achieved national recognition with his contemporary approach to Southeastern landscape. His images of native palm trees and various waterfowl have become part of the Draper iconography in his colorful, actively painted works. A variety of these works will be offered for sale. A new shipment of select sweetgrass baskets for the holiday season will be available. This collection has been spotlighted in Travel & Leisure magazine.
Gloria Dalvini Watercolors is located at 101 Scotts St. This unique waterfront studio/gallery is filled with original watercolor paintings and prints of the lowcountry's historic homes, marshes and flowers by Gloria Dalvini. Her most recent work will be featured during Gallery Walk.
Juxtaposition, an expressive curiosity shop located at 812 Bay St., dances among the funky and whimsical. There are gifts galore. For the seeker of local artwork, one can find ceramics by Frank Homer, decorative glassware by Kazuko Fuller, impressionistic paintings by Carol McDaniel and Chevis Clark, and hand painted mirrors by Bluffton artist Jon Nelson. And, throughout the shop are the talents of Orral Anne Moss, the proprietor's mother.
Indigo Gallery at 813 Bay St. houses a 40-artist collection of original oils, watercolors and acrylics, engravings, serigraphs, giclée, etchings and collector prints. On the night of the Gallery Walk, a special collection of local artist Polly Swenson's popular miniatures as well as several new paintings depicting the Lowcountry will be on view. Her finely detailed work is especially suited to her rendering of working shrimp boats and the marshes she loves.
On the corner of West St, the Rhett Gallery at 901 Bay St. houses two floors of art. Recently chosen as the "Best Gallery North of the Broad River" and Nancy Rhett as the "Best Artist" by a regional art publication, her watercolors and prints span a wide variety of subjects. To quote the article, "If ever you should find yourself trying to describe your Lowcountry home to a stranger in a strange land, save yourself the trouble-just show him a Nancy Rhett".
Across the street at 904 Bay St., the Shipman Gallery welcomes you to visit and view Barbara Shipman's most recent series of paintings that reflect a contemporary essence with an abstracted image of the Lowcountry. Shipman feels art should be creative and less a rendering of a photograph. Her aim is to create a painting that summons the "feel" like something, instead of merely looking like something. With more than 100 collectible reproductions and many originals of varying styles, Shipman Gallery is definitely a "something for everyone" gallery.
Art & Soul is located in the newly renovated Old Bay Marketplace at 917 Bay St. The gallery features local and regional artists and offers a variety of media, images and styles, such as original paintings by Mary Segars, Marlies Williams, Pat Kelly, Doris Schrock, Jon Nelson, Mary Pratt, Allen Rodgers and others. In addition, silhouettes by John Richard Jones, screenprints by Robert Hild and varied mixed media works by Terry Waldron are available. The gallery also offers a variety of pottery, both functional as well as one of a kind pieces, by artists such as Alison McCauley, Jo Jeffers Wingfield, Giana Eden, Marlies Williams and others. The variety at Art & Soul also includes photography, glass, metal sculpture, soft figurative sculpture, and wonderful unique jewelry. During Gallery Walk, local poet Scott Gordon will be available to sign copies of his book, "Et tu Spacecadeaux".
The Gallery, also located in the Old Bay Marketplace, features original artwork produced by regional and local artists, including oil on canvas, sculpture in bronze, marble and verdite, etchings, drawings and one of a kind decorative glass. Oriental rugs from China, India and Pakistan are also available. Featured artists include Bolton Smith, Billie de La Penha, Wayne Trapp, Ronnie Wells and William Turner. Outstanding work in traditional contemporary, abstract and impressionist may be seen at The Gallery Monday through Saturday. Shipping, delivery, and installation of purchased works are also available.
