Durham Arts Council in Durham, NC, Features Masks by Donovan Zimmerman
Masks is the title of an exhibit by puppeteer and mask maker, Donovan Zimmerman that will hang in the Allenton Gallery of the Durham Arts Council Building in Durham, NC, through Nov. 6.
This exhibit displays some of the masks Zimmerman has used in his performances in the Triangle area with PaperHand Puppet Intervention. His masks have been seen in performances at the Haw River Festival, Carrboro Fete de la Musique, Festival for the Eno, and most recently at the Forest Theater Festival in Chapel Hill, NC, where Zimmerman wrote and directed a full-length puppet play called A Very Old Unfinished Story. His masks and performances encompass the profound and the silly, the sacred and the profane, myth and mysticism, pain and pleasure.
Zimmerman, a native of Ohio, has been living in Saxapahaw, NC, for approximately two years. He attended the School for Creative and Performing Arts, and the Art Academy in Cinninnati where he studied art and drama. He has traveled throughout the US and Canada, Central America and India for most of the past ten years.
Zimmerman began to perform solo in 1995 with his first mask creations. In Oregon he started Sticks and Stones Theater which performed on the West Coast. He has recently found himself in NC where he and Jan Burger (a local puppeteer and activist) started Dreaming Dog Theater which changed their name to PaperHand Puppet Intervention this past summer. PaperHand is committed to its work, and hopes to continue bringing Puppet Theater, joy and inspiration to the community at large and small.
