Francis Marion University in Florence, SC, Art Gallery Series Features Works by Marge Moody
Collages by Marge Moody will be displayed Oct. 10 through Nov. 22 in the Hyman Fine Arts Center gallery on the Francis Marion University campus, just outside Florence, SC, as part of the FMU 2000-2001 Art Gallery Series. Native Art of the Americas Collection from the Florence Museum will also be displayed.
Moody is an assistant professor of art at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC. She was recently awarded a South Carolina Arts Commission Individual Artist's Grant. She majored in drawing and painting at one of the four Scottish art colleges, where emphasis was placed on acquiring sound observational skills using traditional media. Drawing, as well as painting in oils from the figure and from still-life, comprised the major part of her study. Upon graduating from art college, she spent eight years working in a small studio in a walled garden in the heart of Edinburgh.
Over the next 20 years, Moody's work became more abstract. "A pressing need to diversify in subject matter and color" stimulated Moody to explore the collage medium, using torn and cut papers pasted onto mat board. Her early collage work consisted of inexpensive paper sources such as magazines, however, Moody says she increasingly uses papers that are drawn and painted to her own specifications. "This work reflects my intuitive involvement with inter-relationships of color, line, texture, shape and space and how these must be manipulated until they find their exact place in the piece," Moody said.
The objects on loan from the Florence Museum are only a small part of a larger collection of treasures from around the world. This exhibit features both prehistoric and modern-day works of natives of the Southern, Central and Northern American continents. Most of the objects displayed at FMU are occasionally exhibited at the museum, but are usually kept in storage awaiting expanded exhibition space.
