Charlotte Art League in Charlotte, NC, Offers Fall Juried Member Art Show

The Charlotte Art League in Charlotte, NC, will present its Fall into Art juried show which will be on view from Nov. 2 through Dec. 1, 2001, in the Charlotte Art League Gallery. The exhibition and competition is sponsored by The Crosland Group, Inc. and by Shelco, Inc.

The exhibition features works by CAL members only. What is important about this show is that it is one of the only venues in Charlotte that makes it possible for local artists to be juried by an outstanding professional. This year's Fall into Art will be juried by Christie Taylor, co-owner of the Hodges Taylor Gallery in Uptown Charlotte. Artists often work in isolation, not always convinced that their art matters or is "good".

David Estey & father

Having a professional gallery owner, such as Christie Taylor, who is highly respected in the Charlotte's arts community jury the art of emerging artists is highly valued. The spring show, was juried by Herb Jackson were 168 paintings were submitted and only 48 were accepted for that exhibition. The Best of Show Award in that show went to David Estey for a bold abstract black and white drawing entitled "Catholic". Estey teaches at the Tryon Center for the Visual Arts in Charlotte.

Taylor has managed galleries for 25 years. She received a BA in Art from Queens College, in Charlotte, and attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Arts in Philadelphia in 1989. She curated "Nine from North Carolina", an exhibition that opened at the National Museum for Women in the Arts in Washington, DC. Taylor is also a 1999 winner of one of the Business Journal's Women in Business Achievement Awards.

An award ceremony will take place on Nov. 2, from 6-9pm, coinciding with Charlotte's First Friday of the Month Gallery Crawl.

The Charlotte Art League is a 501(c)3 non-profit, operating its Gallery for the promotion of art and artists in Charlotte. The artwork on display is created by artists throughout the Charlotte region and will be available for purchase. The Art League has been in operation for 36 years. However a small group of dedicated artists leased a permanent location in a transitional neighborhood in Charlotte, in 1995 which now houses 14 working artists in its studios.
