Coastal Discovery Museum on Hilton Head Island, SC, Offers Lowcountry Critters

Have you ever seen a three-foot long shrimp or what a Painted Lady looks like up close? The Coastal Discovery Museum in Hilton Head island, SC, has recently opened a new exhibit where you can see both of these and more. The Critters of the Lowcountry exhibit features sculptures, photographs and paintings that highlight some of our most interesting animals. The exhibition will be on view through Oct. 31, 2001.

Metal sculptures of various crustaceans created by Edward John Barbier are being featured. Barbier, who designed and fabricated each of the sculptures, is currently a professor at the Savannah College of Art and Design. He received his BA in Ceramics and Drawing at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, LA, and his MA in Sculpture and Drawing from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. Pieces of Barbier's works have won many awards including an International Award for Animals by the Paris Art Gallery. Pieces of his works are in collections around the United States and in Europe. They have been collected by individuals as well as by institutions including the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, the Jewish Educational Alliance (Savannah, GA), the Museum of Biodiversity at Ohio State University, the AquaCulture Research Facility (Louisiana State University), and the Louisiana State University Department of Entomology.

In addition to the sculptures, colorful photographs of many of our regional butterflies are on display by Jaret C. Daniels, Ph.D., an insect ecologist, nature photographer and avid gardener photographed these beautiful creatures. Currently he is the Curator of Lepidoptera at the Butterfly Kingdom. Prior to that, Daniels managed the Boender Endangered Species Laboratory at the University of Florida where he worked on the captive propagation, recovery and conservation biology of several threatened and endangered butterfly species in the state of Florida and the Caribbean. Currently, he is acting Curator of Butterflies for Butterfly Kingdom Conservatory. Daniels received a BS in Biology from St. John's University in Minnesota and a Ph.D. in Entomology from the University of Florida. He has spoken throughout the Southeast and published over 30 scientific papers, books and popular articles on butterfly biology, behavior, conservation, gardening, and related topics.

The Coastal Discovery Museum's mission is to educate our visitors about the area's unique heritage and environment.
