October Issue 2001
Francis Marion University in Florence, SC, Features Works by Lawrence Anderson
Francis Marion University Art Gallery Series, in Florence, SC, will feature multimedia and collage works by Lawrence Anderson, as well as ceramic works by Paula Smith. The exhibitions will be on view from Oct. 9 through Nov. 21, 2001.
What Goes Where, an exhibit of multimedia and collage works by Lawrence Anderson of Marion, SC, will be on display at the Hyman Fine Arts Center. Anderson earned the BFA degree from the University of South Dakota and the MFA degree from the University of Kentucky. He is the chairman of the Department of Fine Arts and Mass Communication at FMU.
"My personal research includes a quest of forms, content and elements that provoke several associations," said Anderson. "Each time I look at something I see it differently, and each time I view my own work there is a new experience. I strive less to be understood than to understand."
Discovery of the Center, a ceramics exhibit by Paula Smith, will also be on display in the Hyman Fine Arts Center. Smith received the BFA degree from the Kansas City Art Institute and the MFA degree from the University of Illinois. She is an instructor of art at Gaston College in Dallas, NC.
"The female body as a subject this theme is as old as Mother Nature herself," said Smith. "After studying art history and observing art in many museums and galleries, you become aware of the many ways in which the female body has been interpreted. Concerning the nature of female identity, what does it mean to be a woman, historically, experientially, as well as personally?"
