Gallery 18 in Pittsboro, NC, Offers Works by Shannon Bueker

Gallery 18 in Pittsboro, NC, will present an exhibition of new works by Shannon Bueker from Oct. 13 through Oct. 31, 2001.

Bueker of Pittsboro will exhibit several large format pieces of "duos." A pair of women, a pair of chickens, a pair of dogs, a pair of crows - whatever the subject, there will be two of them. A regular exhibitor at Gallery 18, Bueker's current offerings of small watercolors depicting animals, birds, women, and landscapes will also be available.

A long time watercolorist, the artist has come back to acrylics and the large scale, a medium she used in college almost exclusively. Always interested in line, Bueker's recent work explores the use of compressed charcoal and fluid acrylics and how they mix on the canvas. Gesture and process are important elements in her paintings, where drips from very wet brushwork and drawing lines are left as formal elements.

The artist made the following statement about her work:

" I am fascinated by gesture and am challenged to see how much shape and power I can express with the simplest of lines. I look for what is essential or of the essence.Watercolor, ink, charcoal and fluid acrylics are my tools of choice."

" If not starting from something in my sketchbook, then I let the paintings make themselves initially, allowing water, paint, charcoal or ink to tangle together on paper or canvas. But art being what it is, I see reflections of own life, memories, and dreams in the resulting shapes and blurs."

The opening of the exhibition will also mark the first anniversary of the stylish gallery. Jenny McLaurin, jeweler and owner of Gallery 18, first opened the doors one year ago. A Pittsboro native, McLaurin's jewelry commissions have provided steady income for the gallery, but many local artists have seen financial rewards from their exposure there.

Gallery 18 offers many different media in an airy, elegant setting, including pottery, steel, jewelry, sculpture, baskets, fiber, photography, watercolor, and handmade soaps and lotions. It's worth stopping by for a visit.
