Charitable Foundation Helps Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, SC, Purchase Works for Collection
The Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, SC, is known by most for it's significant collection of historic paintings, sculptures and photographs, but for the past 5 years the Museum has also been a leader in acquiring major contemporary pieces, many of which have been done by Charleston artists.
Most recently the Samuel Freeman Charitable Trust gave the museum $22,000 in order to purchase 3 paintings from Tippy Stern Fine Art in downtown Charleston. The works include: Moving With Time, 2001 by Richard Hagerty, Arrival, 2000 by Arn Strasser and a commissioned piece not yet completed called Charleston I, 2001 by Don Nice.
The paintings were chosen by Gibbes Curator of Collections Angela Mack who says that expanding the Gibbes collection to include pieces from the 20th and 21st centuries is essential, "Our mission for the acquisition of contemporary art is to build a significant art collection that relates to Charleston. These three paintings fulfill that mission."
In addition to the 3 pieces purchased from the Trust's funds, the Gibbes has also acquired 20 contemporary and 20th century works in the past year alone, thanks in part to the Collector's Series Program. In this program, participants enroll in a series of events to increase their knowledge of art. A portion of the event fee goes towards the acquisition of an object for the collection. The object is chosen by vote from works selected by the Curator, it is then donated to the museum. "It's a wonderful way to collect art and allow those who donate the money to have a say in which pieces are purchased," said Mack.
