Renowned Sculptor Participated in Governor's School Time Capsule Dedication in Greenville, SC
The South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities in Greenville, SC, dedicated its time capsule on Sept. 26. Internationally known sculptor Daniel Oberti crafted the sundial sculpture cover for the time capsule and was on hand for the ceremony. In addition to sculpting, Oberti lectures on the parallels between art and science.
The stoneware sundial has a fluted bowl and is adorned with Star Dancers, a design created by Oberti for the Governor's School. The bronze appointments include an artist's brush atop a central sphere and two pyramids with orbiting smaller spheres. It provokes consideration of the present moment while paying homage to the passage of time as it casts its shadow on these strategically placed globes incorporating a celestial theme.
The time capsule is filled with more than 80
items gathered by the inaugural class of the Governor's School,
faculty and staff. It will be listed in the worldwide registry
of time capsules maintained by Oglethorpe University and is scheduled
to be opened in 2051.
Designed by the Greenville architectural firm Freeman and Major,
the time capsule was built by Triangle Construction Company. Funds
for the sundial sculpture were donated by parents as well as friends
of the SC Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities.
