The Arts Center in Hendersonville, NC, Features Work by Sallie Ellington Middleton & More
The Arts Center of the Arts Council of Henderson County in Hendersonville, NC, is presenting an exhibition of watercolors of Sallie Ellington Middleton and her uncle, Douglas Ellington. The exhibition entitled, The Natural World of Sallie Ellington Middleton, will be on view from Oct. 6 through Nov. 24 in the D. Samuel Neill Gallery. Also on display will be works by sculptor, Joyce Ruess; woodcarvers Jim Carpenter, Vincent Ciesielski and Frank Voci.
Sallie Ellington Middleton is a well-known watercolorist born and raised in Asheville, NC. She spent much of her childhood roaming through the woods of Chunn's Cove with her father who told her stories of fairies, elves and leprechauns while pointing out the real mysteries and beauty of the forest and its inhabitants. The love and knowledge Middleton acquired during these happy times is evident in the elegant and intimate portrayal of wildlife in Middleton's translucent watercolors.
Middleton credits her uncle, Douglas Ellington, with her initial interest and technical development as an artist. Ellington was a graduate of Echole des Beau Arts in France, one of the finest schools of architecture, but, according to Sallie Middleton, wished he could have spent his life painting. Middleton's book, The Magical Realm of Sallie Middleton, now out of print, was published by Oxmoor House, the book publishing division of "Southern Living".
The impressionistic watercolor landscapes of Middleton's uncle, Douglas Ellington, the architect of many of the buildings that define Asheville such as the old S & W cafeteria, First Baptist Church and City Hall will also be on exhibit.
