Hodges Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Photography of Carl Bergman

Hodges Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, NC begins its series of solo photography exhibitions in the Photography Room with Carl Bergman's Photographs of Ireland. The exhibition opens Oct. 5 and continues through Nov. 30, 2001.

Bergman is a NC photographer known for his black and white photographs. The work at Hodges Taylor is a series of photographs, which are the result of two extended trips to Ireland in 1985 and 1987. Captured by the history and timelessness of the country, Bergman used the rural landscape of Ireland, particularly its west coast, as the subject of these photographs.

The Irish western coast has a wonderful scale - rolling hills with fields, mountainous areas reaching to the edge of the North Atlantic and the tremendous cliffs cascading down to the sea. The combination of the lush landscape and the maritime climate made for brilliant changes of light or dark, sun or rain, wind or stillness all during the course of a single day. The continually shifting weather created a dynamic backdrop against which to view and to experience ancient ruins, small villages and rural roadways.

The solo exhibitions of photographers will change every two months. In December, the Photography Room will feature the work of Susan Page, which runs through January. The featured photographer in February is Jerry Uelsmann until March, and followed by Martha Strawn in April and May. Carolyn DeMeritt's solo exhibition will open in June and remain on exhibit through July.
