McCormick Arts Council in McCormick, SC, Features Works by Anne Ray

The McCormick Arts Council in McCormick, SC, is featuring an exhibition of works by Anne Ray from Oct. 2 - 31, 2001.

"I don't worry too much about talent. I use what I do have, the discipline to paint every day, says Ray, the featured artist at McCormick Arts Council at the Keturah for the month of Oct.

Ray was born in McCormick and first discovered she had the creative flare while creating floral designs for the family florist business in McCormick County. It wasn't until many years later that she gave herself the opportunity to listen to that inner voice that called her to a whole new life.

After living in Georgia and Florida, she and her husband bought a sailboat and enjoyed the carefree cruiser's lifestyle for 8 years. They then decided to become landlubbers and settled in the Chesapeake Bay area. In 1990, before moving to the Bahamas, Ray purchased a watercolor set for $1.99 and decided that the long voyage was the time to explore her secret passion. Within the quiet and rustic beauty of her new home, Ray discovered a well spring of talent that she never knew she had. Her love of the sea generated the source of her first subjects.

Even though it all began as a kind of experiment, Ray found herself drawn to spending more and more time drawing together all the nuances that make a work of art complete. Interest began to grow and she began to sell some of her works. Ray created her own greeting card cottage industry and has a number of series cards displayed and has sold them at various tourist shops and hotels around the Abacos. Ray is well known throughout the Bahamas for capturing the essence of the Bahamian people.

Tourist visiting the Bahamas from throughout the world have been to Ray's studio. Her work is in numerous private and corporate collections. She has designed work for the Bahamian government and is the official artist for Abacos Beh, Resort and Marina, the largest resort in the Abacos. For the past three years, Ray has designed the T-shirts and programs for RTIA, the largest sailing regatta in the Bahamas, and her paintings are given as overall prizes. She has been invited to display her work in a number of galleries throughout the southeast.

Bright colors are Ray's signature, and her style and technique are quickly recognized in the Bahamas. Her paintings have become very collectable.
