Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, NC, is Location of Joint Meeting

On Nov. 16, the Delhom Service League and Friends of the Mint will come together at the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, NC, for a combined meeting. The guess speaker will be Dr. Samuel Grober who will give a talk entitled, Of Meiss-en Men: The Pangs and Passions of Collecting European Porcelain.

Dr. Grober started seriously collecting Meissen porcelain around 1955 and soon branched out to other factories. His collection presently has works from over 40 factories, from 10 countries and includes 600 pieces of porcelain.

Dr. Grober served in the US Army Engineers from 1942-46. He was in charge of sawmills and logging in the South Pacific; later Assistant and Acting Chief of Forestry Division in General MacArthur's headquarters in Japan. Grober also served on the advisory team regarding the formation of the Japanese Constitution.

Since 1946, Dr. Grober has been in the specialty hardwood veneer and lumber business in order to support my grandchildren - his porcelain collection. He has been very active at the Art Institute of Chicago where he has endowed two galleries and a curatorship in the decorative arts. Dr. Grober has also served on the Board of Paine Art Center and Gardens, Oshkosh, WI; American Ceramic Circle, and the Decorative Arts Committee of the Art Institute.

Portions of his collection have been on exhibit at several museums and Dr. Grober has given lectures on porcelain at various venues including the Paine Art Center and Gardens; Marquette University, Milwaukee; the Antiquarian Society at the Art Institute of Chicago, and the American Ceramic Circle.

Dr. Grober has been a member of several organizations including the American Ceramic Circle, The English Ceramic Circle, The French Porcelain Society, The Swiss Friends of Ceramics, and the "Keramos" Ceramic Friends.

The Delhom Service League presents such programs on the third Tuesday of the month (with this one exception.) Coffee will be served at 10am and the lecture begins at 10:30am at the Mint. The event is free after museum admission for non-members.
