Smith-Killian Fine Art in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Darrell Davis & Martin Gates

Smith-Killian Fine Art in Charleston, SC, is proud to present works by nationally recognized sculptors Darrell Davis and Martin Gates for the month of October, 2001. Their exhibition begins Oct. 5.

Although the two artists work with wildlife subject matter, their medium of choice differs from bronze to natural woods. Davis' wildlife subjects emerge proudly from their natural habitats. Cast in bronze and standing tall, the animals in his work have distinct personalities. Their contours and forms thrust in many directions, always keeping within an acute sense of design. The individual animals encompass different planes of space, juxtaposed in a unique and formal manner.

Davis has exhibited regularly at the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition in Charleston. He has also recently started to show his work at the Waterfowl Festival in Easton, MD, within the past few years. He has won numerous awards and honors, including a sixty-three piece life-size commission for the Dallas, Texas, Zoo.

Martin Gate's wildlife sculptures are envisioned and created out of a continued love affair with natural wood. Using exquisite woods such as walnut, cherry, and mahogany, Gate's captures the very essence of his subject matter through his use of line and mass. In his unique style of combining abstract shapes and forms, his woodcarvings bring alive his wildlife subjects in an unusual and striking manner.

Gate's has exhibited regularly at the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition in Charleston, and the Waterfowl Festival in Easton, MD. His work also has been juried in "Birds In Art" (Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, Wausau, WI). In addition, Gate's has been the subject of numerous articles on contemporary wildlife sculptures.
