UNC-Charlotte Offers Baseball Card Exhibition in Cone Gallery
The Artist and the Baseball Card on view at UNC-Charlotte, Charlotte, NC, Oct. 4 through
Nov. 2 is a unique exhibition, including 168 powerful images of
baseball players from the past through the present day which were
created by the nation's top professional illustrators and assembled
in a traveling exhibition for the purpose of raising money to
support Special Olympics. Proceeds from the exhibition have been
sponsoring Special Olympics since 1989. Baseball greats such as
Nellie Fox, Phil Rizzuto, Lefty Grove, Willy Mays, Mickey Mantle,
Dave Winfield, Yogi Berra, Nolan Ryan, Jose Canseco, Johnny Bench
and many, many more are depicted in a wide variety of styles and
media by the illustrators invited to participate in this charitable
event. Many of the images have been autographed by the players,
further enhancing the historical impact of these original pieces
of art.
Bart
Forbes
Artists in the exhibition include famous cartoonists such as Mad Magazine's Mort Drucker, Charles Schulz (Peanuts) and Mort Walker (Beetle Bailey) as well as many other superstars in the field of illustration such as Marshall Arisman, C.F. Payne and Bart Forbes. The art ranges in styles from exacting realism to surrealism to cartooning to pop art. A few of the many locations this show has been seen include The National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY, the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, MA and the Museum of American Illustration/Society of Illustrators in Manhattan, NY.
The show was curated by Murray Tinkelman, an award-winning artist and Professor of illustration at Syracuse University. An energetic, informative and nationally-known speaker, Murray will be bringing to UNC-Charlotte a presentation designed to enhance the appreciation of the art and the artists in the show. He will be present at the opening of the show on Oct.11. His presentation will be given at 7pm in the McKnight Lecture Hall of the Cone Center.
