October Issue 2002
Calhoun Street Art Gallery in Bluffton, SC, Offers Another Group Show
The Calhoun Street Art Gallery in Bluffton, SC, is celebrating its first anniversary with a new show entitled, An Artful Journey. The show opens on Oct 7 and continues through Dec. 1, 2002.
An Artful Journey takes you through the growth and progress not only of the gallery, but also each of the individual artists whose work has been developed and refined during the course of the year. Inspired by the growing success of the gallery, the artists have continued to create fine art pieces, each in his or her own inimitable style.
The 16 artists who comprise this cooperative
gallery all work in different mediums and styles that complement
each other, yet never duplicate. The result is a diverse selection
of fine artwork from which to choose. Gallery visitors will find
paintings in oils, watercolors, acrylics, pastels and mixed mediums.
Collages, woodturnings, gold-leafing,
photography, decoupage, notecards, and high quality prints, as
well as a limited selection of antiques are among the offerings.
In keeping with the Artful Journey theme,
Irene K. Williamson is showing one of her most recent collages,
Worldly Traveler. The semi-abstract, mixed media piece,
predominantly in shades of blue and green, suggests a
ship under sail and incorporates international stamps from an
old passport and recognizable bits and pieces of an expired American
Express credit card.
Doris Shay's work takes us to the south of France with her gouache paintings of vineyard homes. The geometric rows of grapevines lead the eye to the soft pastel colors of the house, glimmering gold in the southern sunlight.
Vickie Bailey Ebbers provides an image in her unique style, suggesting the emotional journey of oneness with the world. Titled, Solitude, the lonely canoe in the foreground, surrounded by a serene emptiness, tells the story.
Not to be missed is Robert Highsmith's atmospheric, watercolor rendering of a wide expanse of marshland and open sky. His high contrast style immediately captures your attention and draws you to journey the space he has created.
With the upcoming holiday season, the Calhoun Street Art Gallery is a wonderful place to stop for unusual, one-of-a-kind pieces of fine art that make striking gifts.
The 16 participating artists include: Betsy Chaffin, Susan Citron, John Diamond, Vickie Bailey Ebbers, Robert Highsmith, Ellen Huey, Louanne LaRoche, Laurie McIntosh, Lynn Parrott, Guido Petruzzi, Doris Shay, Sara Tiffany, Irene K. Williamson, Ann White and Martha Worthy.
