Cheryl Newby Gallery in Pawleys Island, SC, Features Works by Ray Ellis

Ray Ellis Paints the South will be on exhibit at the Cheryl Newby Gallery in Pawleys Island, SC, from Oct. 5 through Nov. 8, 2002. The twenty oils and watercolors to be exhibited are all recent paintings by the 82 year old artist.

Among the works will be paintings of Charleston, Georgetown, McClellanville, Pawleys Island, and Murrells Inlet. Though he now lives in Marthas Vineyard, MA, the Philadelphia native declares a deep affection for the South and especially the Lowcountry. Ellis made his home in Hilton Head, SC, and Savannah, GA. for 17 years. His mother's family was from Georgetown, SC, where his great-grandfather, Richard S. Trapier once owned Windsor Plantation on the Black River.

Ellis' paintings are known to many through the trilogy of books he co-authored with Walter Cronkite that celebrated America's coastlines; "South by Sotheast, North by Northeast, and Westwind. The Cheryl Newby Gallery has represented Ellis since 1987.
