October Issue 2002
Conn Gallery in Landrum, SC, Features Group Exhibition
Conn Gallery in Landrum, SC, presents artists
that have shown with them before, as well as two new faces in
the exhibit on view through Nov. 1, 2002.
Bill Crowell is a metal worker who has been in the business for
eight years. His business has come full circle, his studio starting
in Tryon, NC, then moving to Saluda, NC, and now he's back in
Tryon again. Crowell has run a flourishing business right from
the start, and his clientele come from all over the Carolinas.
He creates tables, chairs, lamps and other beautiful pieces. You
can find his work on his website at (www.SaludaForge.com).
Dale McEntire lives in Saluda, NC, and is a well known and popular artist in this region. He is most known for his colorful, abstract landscapes done in pastel, acrylics and oils. The work McEntire brings to this show is new; miniature landscapes interplay with a tapestry-like weave throughout the painting. These pieces are colorful, whimsical, and thought provoking.
Tracey Schmidt, a giclée photographer, resides in Tryon, NC. At 19, she traveled to Japan to live in a Buddhist monastery - her spiritual practices there encouraged her to return to America to search out a tradition that was as authentic and indigenous. Her studies turned to the Native American culture. Schmidt's work is in numerous publications: she's been a part of documentaries and a PBS docudrama, and her work is in exhibits in museums and galleries throughout SC and GA.
Rose Tripoli Mueller was born in Yonkers, NY. Her interest and work in photography and ceramics started in 1975 and lasted into the mid-eighties. Mueller then took a sabbatical, and has come back to her ceramic work in 2000. She has won awards in several juried shows across the Carolinas. Mueller's work includes unique vases, bowls, and wall hangings that incorporate Native American faces, feathers, and beads.
Keith Spencer, a local favorite and well known for his Carolina landscapes and horses, has a southwestern side as well. He is a member of a group known as "Artist Ride". Once a year 33 artists meet on the Cheyenne River in South Dakota to photograph and sketch working cowboys and Native American models. It is from these photos Spencer derives this new work that is presented at Conn Gallery. His work is done in oils and acrylics on wood, paper, and canvas.
