Lowcountry Artists in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Alice Stewart Grimsley
Lowcountry Artists, Ltd., in Charleston, SC, will feature the work of native Charlestonian Alice Stewart Grimsley during Oct., 2002. Her abstract works expressing her emotional response to coping with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) are central to the show.
Unknowingly, Grimsley suffered from the effects of ADD throughout her life, but was diagnosed within the last few years after a lifetime of unconsciously making accommodations. As a child she loved to look at her mother's collection of beautifully illustrated books, but never really read the words. Grimsley says, "I was not a good reader. I remember learning more from the pictures in books than from the words. Listening must be a gift for me, because I did well in school even without liking to read." In fact, Grimsley earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree at Winthrop University and a Master of Education Degree in Biology at The Citadel.
Grimsley is no stranger to hard work or sadness. She lost her mother and sister to cancer at early ages and nearly lost her only son Ricky in a very serious car accident. This latest series, a personal retrospective of her life's journey, is a significant departure from her characteristically bold watercolors of the South Carolina Lowcountry. Grimsley lives with her husband Rick on a tidal creek in Younge's Island, SC. She affectionately refers to her granddaughter as "Queen Elizabeth."
