Woolworth Walk in Asheville, NC, Freatures Exhibit by Three Craft Artisans
Woolworth Walk in Asheville, NC, will host the exhibition From the Earth, on view Oct. 27 through Nov. 16, 2002. The exhibition From the Earth features clay artist Sherry Housley Lowry, fiber artist Gabe Cyr, and metal artist Carro.
Carro
Carro is the ultimate recycler! She combs the mountain, magnet in hand, searching for metal cast-offs to use in her three dimensional works of art. After eighteen years of practicing law in Texas she found her way back to her artistic roots, now residing in Black Mountain where she also has her studio. Flower arrangements from used machine parts, flying pan fish and a sun made from a rubber stamp rack are a few of the whimsical pieces that compliment Carro's functional art such as tables, mirrors and candle holders.
Sherry Housley Lowry work features one of a kind "Spirit" and multi cultural tribal masks directly sculpted in clay. One of her newest pieces titled Medicine Shaman looks as if he would start to speak at any time! She is a member of the prestigious N.I.A.D.A. organization and exhibitor in numerous juried fine arts shows nationwide. Lowry has designed art work for several companies including the Bradford Exchange. She resides inn Swannanoa, NC and is the owner of Backtrack Gallery In Black Mountain.
Gabe Cyr is one of the blessed people who never forgot how to look at the world through the eyes of her two year old self! She is always discovering and creating her art from the space within, listening to the tiny voice of the universe that points in new directions that she would never discover unless she stepped into that abyss. There is the other part of her.. .the part that trained as a psychotherapist and then as an art therapist. She is also in her dollmaking and her doll making workshops. Besides the creative dolls, Cyr is now delving into book art, a fast growing segment of artists are finding amazing ways to create art from books normally thrown away. She is a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild since 1993 as well as being juried into Potomac Craftsman Guild, Carolina designer Craftsman Guild and the Guild of Pennsylvania Craftsman.
