October Issue 2003
The Art Institute of Charlotte Gallery in Charlotte, NC, to Feature Furniture by Marisa Pawelko
The Art Institute of Charlotte Gallery in Charlotte,
NC, will feature an exhibit by Modern Surrealist Marisa Pawelko
from Oct. 3 through Nov. 31, 2003.
This exhibition is designed to take one on a tour through the
various stages of Marisa Pawelko's design career. Examples of
her creativity in furniture design, product development and special
events displays will be exhibited.
Pawelko was born in Woodstock, NY. A passion
for design led her to Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle where
she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Furniture Design.
While in Seattle, Pawelko participated in numerous design exhibitions.
Her lounge chair won the "Fashion Meets Function" award
in the 1999 Furniture and Light Show. Her lingerie cabinet
won first place and the People's Choice award in the 2000 Seattle
Functional Art Contest. Her funky furniture and the interior
design of her Seattle studio were featured on Awesome Interiors
on the Home and Garden TV network.
While still in college, Pawelko designed and marketed her own
line of handmade furniture and accessories that were sold in galleries
and boutiques around the country. Upon graduation, she moved to
Chicago to pursue a career in design. Two months later, she began
designing gourmet gift sets for DesignPAC, the largest seasonal
giftware corporation in the US. Later, Pawelko was promoted to
Art Director of "Cider House," a line of imported house
wares marketed to warehouse stores including Costco, Sam's Club
and BJ's. Seasonal giftware designed by Pawelko has been featured
by such retailers as Target, Wal-Mart, KMart, Linens and Things,
Bed Bath and Beyond, Family Dollar, Dollar General, Dillard's,
Nordstrom's and Marshall Field's.
Pawelko relocated to Charlotte in Jan. 2001. She worked for about a year designing and developing products for SEI Inc., a smaller gift company in South Carolina. In collaboration with Joyner Events, she has created award-winning displays for such clients as The Charlotte Apartment Association, Elite Flooring, Carolina Site Concepts, Miss Donna's Dance Studio, Presbyterian Hospital, Cort Furniture, C Side Carpets and the Apartment Rental Guide. Designing props and special effects for Bar Mitzvahs, trade shows, theater, dance recitals and parties has become her new passion. She designed a float for the Carolina Panthers for the Nascar Speed Street Parade!
