Sea Gull Gallery Celebrates 28 Years in Mt. Pleasant, SC
When Sea Gull Gallery first opened its doors at 224 E. Coleman Blvd., Mt. Pleasant, SC, Dec. 12, 1974, it was known as East Cooper Arts and Crafts. It was the brainchild of a group of local artists who wanted to promote art east of the Cooper, provide a place for artists to display their work, and teach and encourage the young people of artistic bent. This group of dedicated artists included Virginia Bolton, Charlie De Antonio, Emily Frick, Steve Jordan, Doris Mann, May Milligan, Sherry Palombo, Celest Petit, Nancy Preston, Jim Reed, and Margaret Vahn. Staunch supporters of their efforts were McGraw Darby, mayor of Mt. Pleasant, and B.J. Hale, a reporter for the Moultrie News.
The site chosen for the gallery had served as a wholesale florist's shop. With lots of determination and plenty of elbow grease, the new occupants tackled wet, cement floors and dingy walls. Their teamwork succeeded in turning the florist's shop into a gallery.
They had a gala opening with a band and performers from Joanna's School of Dance.
East Cooper Arts and Crafts became Sea Gull Gallery with incorporation in June, 1978. Incorporators were Susan Anderson, Shirley Foster Carroll, Russell H. Dodds, James Edward Emerson, Donna Davis Escude, IL Ray Everett, Steven A. Jordon, Carolyn Epperly Robinson, Bette Anglin Smith, Patsy Williams Tidwell, John W. Ward, and Rosine Cox Wilson.
Today, twenty-eight years after its conception, at its original location, Sea Gull Gallery displays original paintings in various media, as well as reproductions, by seventeen local artists: Paul Ayres, Betty Beach, Don Boyd, Martha Bryce-Heffron, Derna Conklin, Anna Eddy, Sharon Hyde, Virginia Macy, Jim Meyer, Susan North, Karen Tempel, Betsy Tezza, Anne Thames, Sherry McHarrey, Sandra Booker, and Betty Condon.
