Columbia Museum of Art to Sponsor Pre-Opening Event for Sumter's Accessibility 2004 Exhibition

The Columbia Museum of Art will sponsor a special pre-opening event for Sumter's annual Accessibility exhibition, which opens on Oct. 1 and continues through Oct. 31, 2004, in Sumter, SC.

Grant Jackson, Assistant Educator at the Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia, SC, and Co-Director of Education for Accessibility 2004 has organized a special event that will feature an august panel of art professionals and will include a special screening of a BBC video production dealing with installation art. The panel of experts will discuss the video and also focus on describing, defining and debating concepts of installation art with the attending audience. The video will be viewed first and the subsequent panel discussion will focus on the video and the current Sumter Accessibility exhibition that features installation and site-specific art.

The program is scheduled for Sept. 29, 2004, and starts at 7pm at the Sumter Opera House, 21 North Main Street, Sumter, SC. The event is free and open to the public. The video and panel discussion will be entertaining, educational and fun for students, adults, art lovers and enthusiasts and the art-curious alike.

Jackson's panel of experts includes: Dr. Chris Robinson, Associate Chair, USC Columbia Art Department, Jeffrey Day, Arts Writer, The State Newspaper, Larry Merriman, Gallery Director and Professor of Art, Coker College, Loren Schwerd, Professor of Art, College of Charleston and Janet Orselli, Art Instructor, USC Columbia.

The BBC production video is described as fashionable, engaging and controversial. "The program defines what has come to be known as installation art, while providing a number of examples that unite diverse elements such as architecture, sculpture, painting, video, music and performance. Richard Wilson, creator of the acclaimed 20:50; Tracey Emin, whose My Bed caused a media sensation; and other contemporary artists talk about their environment and site-specific art, through they manipulate space and perception while exploring the dynamic tension between artwork and its setting." - excerpt from synopsis by the BBC.

Jackson is also scheduling a weekly series of casual group discussions that will address concepts of contemporary art and installation art. The discussion sessions will be held weekly starting the first week of October and will end during the last week of October and will be held in private homes as well as downtown businesses and will be facilitated by arts professionals.
