Coleman Fine Art in Charleston, SC, Offers Works by Kim Weiland

Coleman Fine Art in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibition, First Light, featuring watercolors by Kim Weiland for the Sixth Charleston Fine Art Annual, taking place in Charleston from Nov. 5 - 7, 2004. The exhibition will be on view through Nov. 27, 2004. Featured works will provide a glimpse of "off the beaten track" locations of the Carolina coastline. Weiland is most recognized for his use of light in his watercolor landscapes of the ever changing coastline.

Douglas Kimbel Weiland (1953 - ) grew up in rural Chester County, Pennsylvania, which allowed little in the way of instruction. Parental support and encouragement led to private study with local artist and sculptor Anthony Trezza, and further painting instruction with Pat Witt, a South Jersey painter.

Weiland studied at the Tyler School of Art, where he spent a year studying abroad in Italy. After graduation the artist relocated to Ocean City, NJ. Here, the serene influences of the area soon found a stronghold in his watercolors. The transparent qualities of the medium responded well to the study of color and light as Weiland began to record the ever changing image of the coast.

Today, Weiland lives with his family in Ocean City in a worn, 107-year-old Second Empire home. The artist's studio consumes the third floor of their house, and is where Weiland combines his classic painting style with a passion for ships and sailing.

Weiland will be participating in the "Plein Air Painting in the Park" on Nov. 6, from 9am-noon, in Washington Park, a free event of the Sixth Charleston Fine Art Annual.
