Eva Carter Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by William Halsey and Video Where Halsey Discusses Work
The
Eva Carter Gallery in Charleston, SC, is honored to present a
short video of the late William Halsey discussing his work in
1971 entitled, William Halsey: Color & Texture, An Abstract
View. A select group of Halsey's work will be on exhibit at
the gallery. The video will be premiered during the exhibit's
opening on Oct. 15 and shown again throughout the exhibit, ending
on Nov. 13, 2004.
Prior to a mid-career retrospective done by the Greenville County
Museum of Art in 1972, a series of video interviews and documents
were generated by the museum. This historic material was recently
rediscovered and has been being digitally restored. Many of the
questions about the influences and motivations that shaped Halsey's
art are addressed in a first person narrative. The piece clarifies
many of the formative influences, which now intrigue art historians
and collectors.
For those who have enjoyed and collected Halsey's work over the
years, it can be assured that this film will be interesting and
informative for you as well. Within a historical context, Halsey's
work fits within two separate but related frameworks, which is
one of the many reasons there have always been questions. On one
level, his work contributes and is part of the progressive, contemporary
art produced in America during the 20th century. On the other
hand, his work and life fit into his region, being a Charlestonian
(and residing there for most of his life) and a student of the
Charleston Renaissance artist, Elizabeth O'Neill Verner. And because
his art functions on both of these levels, the identity of his
work as a whole sits in a very unique place one not easily
put into words. However, if art is to be "put into words",
the artist may be the best person to speak these words (not always,
but occasionally).
This film, which has never been available to the public, is being
shown along with select works from the collection due to the efforts
of the Halsey/McCallum Foundation.
