October Issue 2004
Hilton Head Art League in Hilton Head Island, SC, Features Works by Jim Stayer
The Hilton Head Art League Gallery on Hilton Head island, SC, is presenting the exhibition, Artistic Potpourri, featuring oil paintings by Jim Strayer through Oct. 23, 2004.
Strayer studied at the Meinzinger School of Art in Detroit, MI. The teaching staff at the Meinzinger School were all recognized artists. He trained as a commercial artist and worked for several years as a free-lance artist and as an ad manager/art director with various retail firms. Subsequently, he moved into other advertising areas, including copywriting and media planning. Fine art was an avocation.
Strayer has continued to paint, primarily in oils and occasionally in pastels. He feels most comfortable painting in a "realistic" style. His "smooth" technique (the absence of noticeable brush strokes) and his perceptive use of color are trademarks of his paintings.
Variety is the word that best describes Strayer's subject matter. He prefers nature scenes and wildlife in particular. Although he will try just about any subject if he feels it will result in an interesting painting, including a whimsical piece now and then. Hence, the title for this exhibition.
Some people say that Strayer's paintings evoke a definite mood, which he says doesn't come from him. "I don't have a mood when I paint. I don't think about mood when I paint. I don't know what it is. I just sit down and paint what I want to paint. I like to create things that people relate to. It's that simple."
Prior to moving to Hilton Head Island in 1979, Strayer displayed his paintings in numerous art shows in Michigan and Ohio, and he did commission work. On Hilton Head, he has been a regular exhibitor at the Art League Gallery; this will be his third show as featured artist at the Art League. He also had a one-man show at the Hilton Head Library. He continues to display his work in local galleries, the annual Evening of the Arts, as well as special art exhibitions. In addition, he has been an award winner in juried exhibitions on the Island and his paintings were selected for recent juried shows in Florida, Missouri and Ohio.
Strayer's work is included in many private collections from Connecticut to California.
The Hilton Head Art League is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting the visual arts in the community and increasing the art skills of its members. Established in 1974, the League has become the hub for fine art in the community. The Art League Gallery in Pineland Station exhibits the artwork of its members. Every four weeks a different artist is featured.
The Art League provides scholarships to students studying the visual arts, holds weeklong workshops with nationally renowned art instructors and art classes at the Art Academy on Cordillo Parkway. In Oct., 2004, the Art Academy will celebrate its first anniversary.
