Somerhill Gallery in Chapel Hill, NC, Features Works by MaryLou Higgins

Somerhill Gallery in Chapel Hill, NC, announces a one-person exhibition for nationally recognized North Carolina artist MaryLou Higgins. Her new sculptural stoneware artworks will be featured in the South Gallery through Oct. 22, 2004

Having been represented by Somerhill Gallery for 21 years, Higgins will be featured in her seventh one-person exhibition at Somerhill Gallery. Her incredible drawing skills and her life-long interest in Flemish tapestries has never ceased to be an inspiration for her figural drawing style. This is in addition to Higgins' own life experiences, her art history background, the trees and plants and architecture that she sees in her day-to-day life and all that she sees in her vivid fantasy life. In her most recent busts Higgins incorporates clear, bright colors, glazes, conspicuous symbolism, as well as a precise attention to detail that dimensionally conveys an emotion or idea through subtle gestures.

Along with her busts, Higgins will present new figurative stoneware "paintings" in ceramic frames. The glazed surfaces, intricate with dazzling color designs, are adorned with superbly sculpted fantasy figures as well as organic forms that provide the viewer with an architectural appeal.

Higgins is an artist that never repeats an idea twice! She is constantly reinventing herself and giving the viewer a fresh look deep into the artist's ever changing creative mind. This remarkable artist's background as an academician in art history as well as a studio teacher has served as a continued inspiration for her. Rounding out this exhibition will be a dazzling display of mixed-media ceramic jewelry, incorporating 24kt gold luster and handmade beads.

Higgins, a Wisconsin native, is a North Carolina resident. She received both graduate and undergraduate degrees from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee.

Higgins has been chosen for exhibitions such as Objects Are at Museum of Contemporary Art, New York City, NY; Silver Sculpture Fantasy in Art at Akron Art Center, Akron, Ohio; Furs and Feathers Museum of Contemporary Art, New York City, NY; Shards of Women at the Fayetteville Museum of Art, Fayetteville, NC; By the Hand: Twentieth Century Crafts, at the High Museum at Georgia Pacific Center, Atlanta, Georgia; Mint Museum of Art Biennial, Charlotte, NC; Gallery of Art and Design at NCSU, Raleigh, NC; and the North Carolina Museum of Art Juried Artists Exhibition, Raleigh, NC.

Higgins has been exhibited as a professional artist in over 180 juried, invitational, and one-person shows and received over 30 awards and prizes since 1945.
