Appalachian State University in Boone, NC,
Presents Tri-State Sculptors Exhibitions
Appalachian State University presents two Tri-State Sculptors
exhibitions at the Catherine J. Smith Gallery and Plemmons Student
Union in Boone, NC. The exhibitions are on view from Oct.
5 through Nov. 5, 2005. Works by Tri-State Sculptor members are
showing at Catherine J. Smith Gallery and works by students involved
in the organization are installed at the Looking Glass Gallery
and throughout Plemmons Student Union.
Founded in 1978, Tri-State Sculptors Association is an organization
formed by sculptors from North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia
to promote public awareness and appreciation of sculpture. In
an effort to exchange ideas and information, the members will
hold their annual conference at Appalachian State University from
Nov. 3-6, 2005. The Tri-State Sculptor's conference brings together
artists, students, and art educators from throughout the Southeastern
US to participate in lectures, demonstrations and workshops. This
conference, entitled Redefining Space, was designed to
"stretch" the vision of these regional students and
artists by presenting contemporary sculpture with particular emphasis
placed on work investigating new technologies, materials, and
concepts.
The exhibition at the Catherine J. Smith Gallery includes large-
and small-scale works in clay, metal, found objects, wood, fabric,
glass, as well as drawings and a video. Jurors for the exhibition
were Hank Foreman, Robin Martindale and Jody Servon, members of
the faculty and staff at the university. Artists included in the
exhibition are: Adam Adcock, Lin Barnhardt, Carl Billingsley,
Dean Carter, Carol Cole, Jan Chenoweth, William W. Donnan, Lynn
Duryea, Michael Fels, Faye Foster, Jock Gault, Mark Gordon, Gary
Gresko, Stephanie Grimes, Martha Bostick Gunter, Roger Halligan,
Elizabeth Henley, Joyce Hilliou, Jane Jaskevich, Hanna Jubran,
Shirley Koller, Jennifer Kincaid, Lucien Koonce, Sharon Collings
Licata, Linda Williams McCune, Dale L. McEntire, Jo-Ann Morgan,
Catherine Murray, David Newton, Lisa Pearce, Michael Sanford,
Beatrice Schall, Derrick Sides, Winston Tite, Paul VanZandt, Gail
Beavers Wall, Anna Belle Whiting, Nan Wollman, Lisa Wood, and
Charles Wright.
The juried show installed at the Looking Glass Gallery and throughout
Plemmons Student Union includes works by students from universities
and colleges from throughout the Southeast. Hoss Haley, a sculptor
from Asheville, NC, chose the works in this exhibition. Awards
will be given to student artists during the conference. In addition
to the gallery exhibitions, outdoor sculptures have been installed
throughout campus and a work by Dan Millspaugh was placed at the
Jones House in downtown Boone.
Rick Lowe speaks at Turchin Center for the Visual Arts on Nov.
4 at 5pm. From the beginning of his career, Lowe has been committed
to merging art with activism. He founded Project Row Houses, a
program that bought 22 "shotgun" houses in the middle
of one of Houston's poorest neighborhoods, and renovated them
into art galleries, workshop spaces, offices and housing for young
single mothers where they can receive life skills training in
child care, money management and home care. Today, Project Row
Houses is a well-established public art program that the NEA considers
to be a model for similar projects in other cities across the
country. Additional information on Project Row Houses can be found
at (www.projectrowhouses.org).
Exhibitions and conference events organized by Appalachian State
University and sponsored in part by: Broyhill Inn and Conference
Center, Catherine J. Smith Gallery, College of Fine and Applied
Arts, Department of Art, Division of Student Development, Office
of Diversity, Plemmons Student Union, and the Turchin Center for
Visual Arts. For additional information on Tri-State Sculptors
