Artspace in Raleigh, NC, Offers New Exhibits for the Fall Season

Artspace in Raleigh, NC,will present several exhibitions including: The Hall of the Guardians, featuring works by Jeff Pender, on view in the Upfront Gallery from Oct. 7 - 29, 2005; New Works by Gustavo de los Rios, on view in the Lobby, from Oct. 7 - 29, 2005; and Textile Towns, featuring photography by Phil Moody, on view in Gallery 2 from Oct. 15 through Nov. 4, 2005.

Jeff Pender

Jeff Pender creates hot-rolled steel and stoneware installations incorporating light and sound, as influenced by his interest in the interaction of viewer and space. He believes that when the viewer becomes a participant in the work, he or she comes away with a more fulfilling experience. The experience becomes not just a visual memory, but a physical encounter as well. Through the manipulation of space, sound, and visual awareness, Pender aims to take the viewer, the participant, to another place - another world, removed from the everyday, from the mundane.

Pender earned a BFA in Ceramics from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and an MFA in Ceramics from the University of Florida at Gainesville. He teaches Ceramics and Design at Central Piedmont Community College in downtown Charlotte, NC.

Gustavo De Los Ríos

Gustavo De Los Ríos was born in Cali, Columbia and began painting at the age of ten as inspired by his older sister.  He trained at the University of Antioquia, Colombia. His goal is to develop an identifiable language and iconography. His paintings are an exploration of gestures and body language that express an idea or a message tied to a specific situation or moment. He aims to express these ideas to the viewer through spirituality, sexuality, color, and subjectivity.

Phil Moody

Over the past few years, Phil Moody has collected stories, impressions, and artifacts from the textile communities of the Carolinas.  After 150 years of this region being a dominant force in textile production, it is now experiencing its demise. Textile Towns developed as a response to the personal histories of the individuals interviewed and photographed by Moody.  The resulting project is his way of honoring those on which the past was built and the present is understood.

Moody earned his MFA from the University of Michican, Ann Harbor, MI, and his Diploma of Art from Edinburgh College of Art, Edinburgh, Scotland. His work has been widely exhibited throughout the United States. Moody is the recipient of numerous awards and honors including a 2004 South Carolina Arts Commission Visual Arts Fellowship, Winthrop University Faculty Research Grants, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Arts & Science Council Artist Project Award.

This project was made possible by the generous support of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Arts and Science Council; Winthrop University Research Council; the Arts Council of Rock Hill and York County; the Rock Hill Tourism and Sports Commission; and the South Carolina Arts Commission (through funding from the National Endowment for the Arts).
