Carolina Galleries in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Julyan Davis and Tom McNickle
Carolina Galleries in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, Julyan Davis & Tom McNickle: New Paintings, which will be on view from Nov. 4 - 24, 2005. Thirty-three new watercolor and oil paintings by Tom McNickle and Julyan Davis, will showcase the landscapes and cityscapes of Charleston and her surrounding areas. The opening is held in conjunction with CFADA's Seventh Fine Art Annual event.
Julyan Davis
Davis, an English-born artist who now resides
permanently in the South, was born in 1965 and received his art
training at the Byam Shaw School of Art in London. After years
of traditional realism, his work has more recently begun to explore
aspects of modernism resulting in paintings that combine traditional
techniques such as glazing with an emphasis on the abstract qualities
of his subject.
Davis states "I have been trying to keep the techniques I
have learned from traditional painting. I have enjoyed using everything
from glazes to impasto and I did not want to lose that kind of
contact with the paint." In describing his current work Davis
states that he keeps "all the light and depth of color of
traditional techniques, but with an emphasis on surface and abstraction."
Tom McNickle
A native of Western Pennsylvania, Tom McNickle paints country houses, woodlands, the open countryside, and Charleston and the South Carolina Lowcountry. Approaching each painting in a meditative state, McNickle captures the essence of the Lowcountry by layering direct, spontaneous strokes of color. McNickle states "painting is not a reality, but an illusion that comprehends that reality. It turns the ordinary into the precious by realizing that they are one and the same.
McNickle studied at Edinboro State University in Pennsylvania. He is a member of the American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society.
Davis and McNickle have captured the ordinary, daily scenes of the Lowcountry through their varied techniques and presented the viewer with a wonderful glimpse into their vision of the surrounding landscape.
In addition to being Charleston's oldest gallery specializing in the art of the Charleston Renaissance, Carolina Galleries also features contemporary paintings celebrating the region's continuing aesthetic evolution. The gallery has been featured in Southern Accents, National Geographic Explorer, Town and Country, and Architectural Digest. Carolina Galleries has a primary emphasis on nineteenth and twentieth century masterpieces, especially landscapes and genre scenes in Charleston art, spanning from the 1850's to the present.
