Centre Stage - SC in Greenville, SC, Presents Works by Glenn Miller
New and Used Paintings, an exhibit of paintings
by Greenville artist Glen Miller, will be on display at Centre
Stage - South Carolina in Greenville, SC, through Nov. 1, 2005.
The exhibit is the second art show in the collaboration between
the Metropolitan Arts Council (MAC) and CSSC in which selected
MAC artist members display their art at the CSSC facility in the
Smith Barney Building at 501 River Street, behind the Westin Poinsett.
New and Used Paintings opened one week prior to the CSSC
production of Sophie Tucker: Last of the Red Hot Mamas,
which runs through Oct. 8, 2005. The production stars Meredith
Reed as the infamous American singer and Daniel Noble as her pianist.
New and Used Paintings consists of both large and small works focusing on the human form, both male and female, in a variety of settings and configurations. "Glen is a very talented draughtsman who fully understands and appreciates the human figure. He presents it in very intriguing ways," commented Martha Severens, Curator of the Greenville County Museum of Art.
"Glen's work is an excellent choice for our production of Sophie Tucker: Last of the Red Hot Mamas, and his paintings represent the individual in a variety of forms. Sophie and her music moved with the times, paving the way for many women entertainers of the 20th century," said CSSC Executive Director B.J. Koonce.
A native of eastern Tennessee, Miller is an alumnus of East Tennessee State University holds an MA from the University of South Florida with further graduate study from the University of Tennessee. Currently teaching at the Greenville County Museum of Art, Greenville Technical College, and Upstate Visual Arts, Miller has taught art in secondary schools and colleges and to adult groups. He is represented locally by the Hampton III Gallery.
"There is something magical for me about a bunch of marks and colors coming together in a unique way to create a credible image. I intentionally seek a more poetic than illusory interpretation of the human form because I believe it to be closer to the truth of experience," said Miller. "New and Used Paintings incorporates both fictional characters and interpretations of the model. Themes of reflection, aging, inner dialogue and storytelling occur often in the work as well as some characters who just want to dance."
