Cheryl Newby Gallery in Pawleys Island, SC, Features Antique Maps & Works by Mark Catesby
The
Cheryl Newby Gallery in Pawleys Island, SC, will present its Antique
Map Show and works from Mark Catesby's Natural History of Carolina
Florida and Bahama Islands. The exhibit will be on view from
Oct. 22 through Nov. 12, 2005.
This year the gallery will offer subjects of natural history interest
alongside the map and chart exhibition. The works of Mark Catesby
(1683-1749) will be on exhibit with antique maps and charts of
the area that Catesby visited and explored during the 18th century.
Catesby's Natural History of Carolina Florida and Bahama Islands,
first published in London in 1731, was the first to illustrate
the birds, plants, animals, fish, and reptiles of the young British
colonies, appearing 100 years before John James Audubon's Birds
of America.
Catesby spent time in South Carolina after
arriving in Charleston in 1722. Catesby's Natural History contained
220 handsome hand colored engravings depicting many birds and
animals along with plants that would have sustained them. Many
of his subjects will be on view for this exhibit, some of which
will be on loan from private collections, however many of the
antique engravings in the exhibit will be offered for sale.
The Cheryl Newby Gallery, which is in its 23rd year, presents
a show each year of original antique maps and charts.
