Young Artists from Across South Carolina Honored at Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia, SC

The Contemporaries of the Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia, SC, present the second annual Young Artist of the Year soirée and silent auction on Nov. 3, 2005, from 7-10pm. This event, established in 2004, features young emerging artists between the ages of 18 and 35 in the state of South Carolina.

Out of a field of 48 artists who submitted art portfolios, a juried committee of three art professionals selected 24 artists to participate in the Young Artist of the Year soire and silent auction. Each of the 24 artists selected may display up to two artworks at the soire and silent auction. The jurors for the 2005 Young Artist of the Year award were Harriett Green, director of visual arts at the South Carolina Arts Commission; Wim Roefs, independent curator and art consultant; and Mike Dwyer, Columbia Museum of Art's exhibition designer and preparator.

The Young Artist of the Year, as selected by the juried committee, and a Contemporaries' Choice award recipient, as selected by a vote of attendees at the event, will be announced at the soire and silent auction. The recipient of the Young Artist of the Year award receives a cash prize of $500, a Columbia Museum of Art Contemporaries' membership ($50 cash value), and a reception in his/her honor at City Art Gallery (Columbia, SC) on Nov. 17, 2005, in conjunction with Columbia's "Vista Lights" celebration. The Young Artist of the Year's artworks will remain on view at City Art through Nov. 26, 2005. The Contemporaries' Choice award recipient receives a cash prize of $150 and a one-year membership to the Contemporaries group.

The following artists have been selected to display their artworks at the 2005 Young Artist of the Year soire and silent auction (listed alphabetically by hometown):

WIS Television's evening anchor, Craig Melvin, will be the emcee at the 2005 Young Artist of the Year soire and silent auction. Thomas Happel of Fuse Productions will provide the evening's musical entertainment, and Cinnamon Hill Caterers will cater the event.

The 2005 Young Artist of the Year soire and silent auction takes place at the Columbia Museum of Art on Thursday, November 3, 2005, from 7 to 10 p.m. Tickets are $40 or $30 for Contemporaries' members and are available at 803/799-2810. A "Soire Signature Package" is also available for $100 and includes two soire tickets, a private preview of the artworks and recognition in the soire program. The Contemporaries is an affiliate membership group at the Columbia Museum of Art that seeks to bring young professionals together in appreciation of the arts and to support the overall mission of the museum. The group hosts a variety of social and cultural events throughout the year for arts enthusiasts ages 21 and above. A portion of the Contemporaries' proceeds goes toward the Contemporaries' Art Acquisition Fund, designed to purchase contemporary art to add to the Columbia Museum of Art's permanent collection.
