Green Hill Center for North Carolina Art and Guilford College in Greensboro, NC, Offers Regional Traveling Exhibit

Green Hill Center for North Carolina Art and the Guilford College Art Gallery at Guilford College in Greensboro, NC, are presenting the exhibition, Thresholds: Expressions of Art & Spritual Life, featuring works by artists from five southern states. Each venue features different works from the exhibition which will be on view through Oct. 23, 2005.

Thresholds is a traveling art exhibition, curated by nationally-recognized independent cultural critic and curator, Eleanor Heartney. Organized by the South Carolina Arts Commission in partnership with the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, Kentucky Arts Council, North Carolina Arts Council, and Tennessee Arts Commission, the exhibition is traveling throughout the southeast and features works in all media by leading contemporary artists from Florida, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. These works, totaling over 100 contemporary works by 53 participating artists, represent a wide range of religious beliefs and spiritual traditions.

The art features all media including painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramic, fiber, photography, installation, site-specific and mixed media. The message embedded in the Thresholds exhibition, says Heartney, is that of religion as a source for hope and understanding, providing a "mirror of the multiplicity of spiritual and religious experiences," and offering a "forum for discussing the larger social, political, and personal issues raised by religion in contemporary culture." Viewers are invited to explore the realms or "borders" inherent in religious belief and practice (i.e. heaven and earth, body and soul, matter and spirit, human and divine, life and death) and spiritual life existing in the "overlap" of these seemingly opposite realms.

On Oct. 6, 2005, from 7-8:30pm, Green Hill Center for North Carolina Art will present, Art and the Sacred, a panel discussion with North Carolina artists participating in the exhibition including: Kathleen Campbell, Christine Clark, David Finn and Susan Harbage Page. The panel will be moderated by Bennett Ramsey, Associate Professor, of Religious Studies, UNC-Greensboro.

Thresholds opened in Charleston, SC, in conjunction with the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies Annual Meeting in Dec. 2003. The exhibition was one of the centerpiece activities of the conference and highlighted the work of the participating artists throughout the city. Charleston, often referred to as the "Holy City", was settled on principles of religious tolerance and diversity. With more than 400 places of worship, religion is deeply embedded in Charleston's history making it a logical place to develop dialogue about religious practices in South Carolina and model for religious diversity and toleration. Artists included in the exhibition were identified through a nomination process facilitated by each participating state arts agency with curator, Eleanor Heartney, making the final selections.
