October Issue 2005
Hilton Head Art League on Hilton Head Island, SC, Features Works by Joyce Albrecht
Hilton Head Art League artist Joyce Albrecht
will be exhibiting and selling her unique collection of 3-d gourds
that she fashioned into art objects. Her show will begin on Oct.
11 and continue through Nov. 5, 2005, at the Art League Gallery
in Pineland Station on Hilton Head island, SC.
Albrecht was born and raised in Glenview, IL, where she taught
physical education and coached in a suburban high school. After
moving to Hilton Head Island in 1993, she became interested in
learning how to build gourd bird houses. Albrecht's studies have
earned her the esteemed title of "gourd head."
Albrecht produces not only bird houses but vases and other sculptures from gourds. Her aim is to keep them earthy in appearance, using natural techniques, materials and colors in their designs. She also fashions carved wooden bowls, Appalachian straw brooms and rustic furniture.
