October Issue 2005

Mars Foundation for the Arts Gallery on Hilton Head Island, SC, Features Works by Island Artists Group

Island Artists, a group of local artists, will fill the walls in October at the Mars Foundation for the Arts Gallery on Hilton Head Island, SC. The multi-media exhibit will be shown from Oct. 3 - 31, 2005, and features the works of Laura Cody, Kitty Hardee and Rose Harrison.

Although these artists have been painting for years, this is their first large exhibition. Their works include oils, acrylics, watercolors, charcoal, pen & ink with watercolor wash, and pastels. During the exhibit there will be special events presented.

Island Artists is three visual artists who became friends while spending many hours painting together at an art studio. When the historic Fordham Hardware building in downtown Beaufort was converted to a market in July of 2004, they opened an art gallery there. Their Beaufort gallery allows them to have a venue where they can interact with their clients as they paint. They enjoy answering questions and getting feedback from everyone who comes to chat.

Laura Cody is a prolific and talented artist who specializes in oil paintings. She uses lush colors in subject matter encompassing everything from Lowcountry landscapes to tender portraits of animals and children. She has participated in many art fairs and shows and received recognition from the Hilton Head Art League for a pastel of one of her grandchildren. Cody says that her favorite compliment about her art is that it "makes people feel happy."

Kitty Hardee has a gift for manipulating the subtle nuances of charcoal, depicting still-lifes of musical instruments and other objects. Her love of the Lowcountry and flowers is apparent in her acrylic paintings. Her oil paintings reflect her joy in the range of nature's beauty. She is "energized by visiting with people who love art."

Rose Harrison's watercolor paintings convey a sense of tranquility and a love of Lowcountry scenes, featuring area buildings, boats and trees, She enjoys depicting her subjects in a style which combines elements of impressionism with those of realistic representation. Harrison is a third generation artist, who frequently used art in working as a therapist with clients who had experienced abuse or trauma. She says, "Just as art can help communicate feelings of pain, rage, or frustration, it can also help heal, and art expresses wonder at the beauty all around us."
