Mars Foundation for the Arts Gallery in Bluffton, SC, Offers Exhibit by the Sisterhood
From the North and from the South (of the Broad River, that is) comes The Sisterhood with the collective exhibit Sister Act at the Mars Foundation for the Arts Gallery in Bluffton, SC. The exhibit, on view from Oct. 1 - 31, 2005, features the work of Gertrude Hendricks Palmer, Dawn Duff, Sue McFarland, Molly Carrington, and Lily Joplin.
The Sisterhood came together during this past summer when the women got to know each other through art openings and events at Mars. "This is a fantastic group of women, and we are truly looking forward to having Sister Act on display in Bluffton," said Doug Miller. Sister Act will be the first show at Mars to showcase the work of Gertrude Hendricks Palmer and Arts Council of Beaufort County interim director Lily Joplin.
The artists represent a variety of styles and
mediums. Sue McFarland is a basket weaver and "needle
artist", creating whimsical and popular vests, scarves and
other wearable art. Molly Carrington calls her work "assemblage
junque art" and uses found objects to create new and amazing
forms, including her funky tin can flowers, which are sold out
quickly to folk art collectors.
Lily Joplin paints on discarded windows and over old canvases,
focusing on simple forms and designs. Dawn Duff is a painter
and also uses polymer clay to create beautiful jewelry and her
popular Prayer Bowls and Wedding Plates.
Speaking of weddings, Gertrude Hendricks Palmer is known as "The
Wedding Artist". She specializes in creating portraits on
site at weddings, but her work also includes figure paintings
and abstracts.
