October Issue 2005
Silver Fox Gallery in Hendersonville, NC, Features Works by Carol Beth Icard and Sharon Tesche
An exhibit of new work by painter Carol Beth Icard and ceramist Sharon Tesche opens at the Silver Fox Gallery on Oct. 7. Titled, EARTH ENERGY: Language + Form, the exhibit continues through Nov. 2, 2005.
Carol Beth Icard
Icard, whose new paintings include words, states
she has always had a love affair with words, inspired by her poet
grandmother. "As a painter," Icard said, "I
come to words in different ways. The line and form of letters
become characters, color and composition that please me."
When she wants a word to be contemplated, Icard may 'discreetly
etch' it into wet paint or 'boldly splay' it across a canvas.
But even when the word is obscured in the painting, Icard wants
the observer to respond to the shape of the writing and to subjectively
solve the mystery.
Icard, now a resident of Landrum, SC, has studied art in Italy
with Paola Princivalli Conti and in the Berkshires with Mark Milloff
and Benigna Chilla. She has exhibited in group and solo shows
throughout Massachusetts and North and South Carolina, including
shows at the Spartanburg County Museum of Art in Spartanburg,
SC, the Saul Alexander Gallery in Charleston, SC, and the Upstairs
Gallery in Tryon, NC.
Sharon Tesche
Sharon Tesche's new work consists of "Sante Fe plates," a softer, more organic version of her wall platters, and "trinity boxes," a new form that Tesche refers to as 'spiritual." Tesche's hand-built, slab constructed forms are her interpretation of the beauty and grace of nature.
Tesche, now a resident of Saluda, NC, retired from a 30-year career in advertising to pursue her interest in ceramic art. She has studied under noted raku artists Harvey Sadow and Penny Truitt, as well as at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts and Odyssey Center for Ceramic Arts. Tesche has exhibited in shows at the Dallas Center for Contemporary Art in Dallas, TX, the Kellogg Center for the Arts in Hendersonville, and the Upstairs Gallery in Tryon.
Both Tesche and Icard have been resident artists of the Silver Fox Gallery since 2003.
