Waterfront Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Sudie Payne Daves
Waterfront Gallery in Charleston, SC, is presenting an exhibit of works by Sudie Payne Daves, on view through Oct. 31, 2005.
Having enjoyed flowers all of her life, Daves continues this custom by growing and grooming flowers in her yard and home. Then, she transfers their beauty to canvas.
Daves lives near Conway, SC, on the Waccamaw
River. This location is ideal for plants like the Trumpet Vine,
Jack-in-the-Pulpit, Beauty Berry, Magnolia, Malaviscus, Hibiscus,
and Lizard Tail; all of which proliferate in her yard. She likes
to bring cut Lilies or Amaryllis into her studio to paint. Recently,
she has been going through a red phase and this can be seen in
many of her paintings. There is no question with the realism,
but one can see a sublime feature with a velvety quality giving
each flower its due.
Daves also visits the Carolina Bays in order to paint Pitcher
Plants and Venus Fly-Traps, but only paints these endangered species
from the photographs she takes.
