Coleman Fine Art in Charleston, SC, Offers Works After Nightfall
An exciting event heralded not by a new day but by seductive nightfall - dreams, shadows, mist and moonlight come together in, Nocturnes, the color of night, a new group show at Coleman Fine Art in Charleston, SC, beginning Nov. 3. Three artists - John Cosby, Marc Hanson and Mary Whyte - have created new works illuminating the night, using watercolors, oils and pastels in the distinctive styles that have brought each of them to national prominence. Street scenes, landscapes and sensuous figurative images emerge unlike any previous works by these artists. The exhibit continues through Dec. 2, 2006.
John Cosby
John Cosby is a newcomer to the Charleston art scene. A native of Laguna Beach, CA, (and a former White House administrator), Cosby is a master of bold color and energetic brush strokes. He is a founding member of the Laguna Plein-Air Painters Association, and first appeared in Charleston at last year's Wet Paint plein air event sponsored by Coleman Fine Art. Nocturnes is the first Charleston exhibition for this nationally-known artist.
Marc Hanson
Marc Hanson lives in Taylors Falls, MN, and teaches plein air landscape painting at the Minnesota River School of Fine Arts. His serene works in oil and pastel focus on landscapes, which have been featured at the gallery since 2005.
Mary Whyte
Mary Whyte is a highly recognized Charleston artist whose works are collected around the nation. Her landmark watercolors of Lowcountry women are now in several art museums, and she continues to combine this distinctive perspective with Lowcountry landscapes in oil. Like Cosby and Hanson, this is her first collection of nocturnes, composed especially for this event.
In conjunction with Coleman's new Nocturnes exhibit (opening during the Fine Art Annual weekend Nov. 3-5, 2006), art historian Jean Stern, Director of the Irvine Museum of Art, will give a lecture on Plein Air painting at the Gibbes Museum of Art on Thur. evening, Nov. 2, 2006. On Sat., Nov. 4, 2006, the featured artists will gather at Washington Park in downtown Charleston to demonstrate plein air painting (by day) and offer their work for the charity auction at the evening gala.
For tickets to the free 5:50pm lecture by Jean Stern, as well as the private Thur. evening preview of Nocturnes at Coleman Fine Art, call the gallery at 843/853-7000.
