Jerald Melberg Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Brian Rutenberg
Jerald Melberg Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is honored to present its third solo exhibition of abstract landscape paintings entitled, Riverbend, by Brian Rutenberg. The exhibit delves into the artist's fascination with the particular landscape and quality of light of the Carolina Lowcountry. Riverbend will be on view from Oct. 21 through Dec. 9, 2006.
Rutenberg says, "I was born and raised
in the unique and resplendent part of South Carolina from Myrtle
Beach down to Charleston and as far back as I can remember it
has served as my muse. From hushed rivers and salty marshes to
twisted Live Oak trees clotted with Spanish Moss, coastal South
Carolina is robust with visual poetry, a landscape complicated
in its layers, requiring delicate modulations of color to evoke
a hallucinatory, melancholic light."
A South Carolina native, Rutenberg received
a BFA from the College of Charleston and an MFA from the School
of Visual Arts in New York City. Since 1985 Rutenberg has been
honored with over 100 gallery and museum exhibitions across the
United States. Most recently his paintings were shown in a solo
exhibition titled Brimming Tides at the South Carolina
State Museum in Columbia. While at USC Rutenberg worked with the
Atelier to create a series of limited edition, hand-colored etchings
and monotypes. Each of these vibrant prints will be available
for acquisition at the gallery.
The exhibition is accompanied by a full-color catalog with an
essay by Scott Lucas.
