October Issue 2006
Lowcountry Artists Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Dawn Caldwell
Lowcountry Artists LTD in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, Crossings, featuring works by Columbia, SC, artist Dawn Caldwell, on view from Oct. 1 - 31, 2006.
Like sparkling jewels, Caldwell's new acrylic
paintings shimmer with colors of vibrant turquoise, sapphire and
gold. The award-winning watercolorist's new acrylic direction
with thick textures and abstraction is a bold departure from her
previous traditional and closely controlled style.
Crossings perhaps exemplifies her transformation most dramatically.
The non-objective acrylic painting has a dominance of blue hues
in the background, repeated rectangular overlapping gold shapes
with a splashy curved line swirling about in reds and black. Suggestive
of a city block with intersecting streets, a dramatic "swoosh"
charges the composition with almost cosmic energy. Caldwell uses
the restful, aquatic blue to soothe and the pulsing red accents
to surprise and awaken the senses.
Caldwell has been exhibiting for the past three
years. Included in the exhibit are her traditional watercolors
of floral still lifes and restful scenes of the lowcountry which
she continues to paint. "It was time for exploring a new
direction, but I don't plan to abandon my roots. I still love
to paint my traditional still lifes and am currently starting
a new series of my plantation figures which have been so successful
for me. The looseness and freedom of abstraction in acrylics energizes
me," the multi-talented artist explains.
The traditional series of plantation life will be featured in
an exhibition at The Artist Basement in Columbia, SC, showing
for the month of December.
