October Issue 2006
Nina Liu and Friends in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Cynthia Tollefsrud
Nina Liu and Friends in Charleston, SC, celebrates the change of seasons with an exhibition of work by Cynthia Tollefsrud. The exhibit, Where I've Been - Where I'm Going, will open on Oct. 6 and continue through Nov. 30, 2006.
Tollefsrud uses layers of glazes and jewel-toned colors to produce paintings that are laden with double meanings. Animals and humans compete with each other for primacy in these fanciful works, and Tollefsrud regularly uses text to create narrative and enrich the images. Sly humor underlies the paintings' innocent, nostalgic qualities.
Tollefsrud says that the work she has created for this exhibition "has brought back a few fun themes from the past." Images of the Madonna and musclemen are two prevalent themes from her past work. Tollefsrud has revisited those themes, drawing inspiration for several of the paintings in the exhibition from the photographs of Eadweard Muybridge and the work of Flemish painters. "Modern" themes such as rocket ships occur in Tollefsrud's paintings as well. She has said that among the inspirations for those images were the Apollo missions to the moon and "the fanciful spaceship artwork of the 20th century."
Tollefsrud has exhibited her work at the Hunter Museum of Art and the Carroll Reece Museum in Tennessee. This is the ninth exhibition to feature her work at Nina Liu and Friends.
