Smith-Killian Fine Art in Charleston, SC, Offers Works by Shannon Smith
Smith-Killian Fine Art in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, Reflections, featuring the newest works in oil by Charleston artist Shannon Smith. The exhibition opens on Oct. 6, in conjunction with Charleston's French Quarter Art Walk, and will run through Oct. 20, 2006.
The exhibit features an array of Smith's favorite genres, including still-life, landscapes and figurative works - each of the paintings remain consistent with the exhibit's overall theme, ranging from a spiritual sense to physical sense. "Reflections is a representative of all my passions," explains Smith, "As a Charleston native, it was also an opportunity to reminisce about Charleston life."
Reflecting on Grace,
one of the featured paintings unites enthusiasts with the Memorial
Grace Bridge, a bridge that defined the Charleston skyline for
close to a century. Other paintings pay homage to the shrimpers
and their boats that have horded Charleston waters for decades. And,
of course, landscapes demonstrate the beauty behind the region's
natural surroundings and how the light reflects on it, allowing
the viewer to see it from a different perspective.
"We see and feel reflections everyday," explains Smith.
"This feeling is vivid in each of my works that I have chosen
to paint whether its through our own personal experiences or natural
reflections created by light; we're surrounded by them."
Smith has emerged beyond the title of up-and-coming artist and
has established a solid reputation within the art community. Regardless
of what subject she chooses to paint, she has proven to possess
an unusually keen eye and an unrivaled sensitivity to light. Smith
received a BFA from Clemson University in 1994, and since then
has been painting professionally. She has been honored by the
Oil Painters of America, receiving the Award of Excellence for
a painting shown this summer.
Smith-Killian Fine Art is located at 9 Queen Street in the heart of the city's French Quarter District in Downtown Charleston. The gallery features works by Lowcountry painter Betty Anglin Smith and her triplets, painters Jennifer Smith Rogers and Shannon Smith, and photographer Tripp Smith. Sculptures in bronze by Darrell Davis; works in oil by Kim English and Susan Romaine and photographs by Tom Blagden, Jr. are also available. Subject matter ranges from local and European landscapes to architectural works and still life.
