Charleston Artist Guild in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Sarah Allums Kuhnell
The
Charleston Artist Guild in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit,
Escapes, Retreats, and Other Fantasies, featuring works
by Sarah Allums Kuhnell, from Oct. 1 - 31, 2007.
With a twist on the travel postcard, Kuhnell offers an itinerary
of "wish you were there!" images. Drawing on imaginary
as well as actual places and times, Kuhnell portrays retreats
near and far and wanders from the recognizable, to the whimsical,
to the abstract along the way.
"There are places we long to explore but may never see. As there are moments we want to abide that cannot continue, so there are people we treasure but may not meet. Some are real places that reside within and sustain us. Some of these paintings are imaginary junctures created playfully and lovingly, without plot, but like good fiction, a page to hang a heart in. Enter gently for the location is fragile, the climate delightful," says Kuhnell.
Kuhnell utilizes a variety of media to realize the pieces in Escapes, Retreats, and Other Fantasies - oil, pastel, watercolor and acrylic find their use in landscape, abstract and still life. Striving to capture unique aspects of light, time and place, Kuhnell utilizes contrasts of texture, edge, color and value to advantage. "Exchanging real world problems for the process of painting is itself an escape into creative space and time. It is retreat into different sets of problems!," laughs Kuhnell.
An award-winning painter, Kuhnell began formal art studies in high school, then followed with a BA degree in Fine Art from the University of Southern Mississippi. She has attended various workshops through the years. As her family matured, she continued to pursue art and other interests, earning her teacher certification and briefly teaching. Kuhnell, a resident of Summerville, SC, is a founding member of Art Central Ltd. Gallery there.
