October Issue 2007
Lowcountry Artists Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Lynda English
Lowcountry Artists, Ltd. in Charleston, SC, is proud to announce an exhibition of works by Lynda English, entitled Charleston, Past and Present. The showing will be on view from Oct. 5 - 31, 2007.
English, one of the recent additions to the Lowcountry group, has been a working artist for over 30 years, most of that time solely as a watercolorist. A recurring theme in English's work is the unusual play of light on varying surfaces and during different times of day.
English states, "Strong contrasts interest me-the way color works differently at night or different times of day. I like the play of artificial light into darkness causing the shapes of buildings to elongate. The colors in the shadows become stronger and richer - when to the eye of many observers they may simply seem black."
The exhibit presents two series of work. The first is of buildings, homes, and public places of the present day city and the Charleston of the past. English has also worked with two young women in a series of figurative paintings, depicting them as they are painted today or as they might have been 150 years ago. Their compelling features remind us of the rich heritage of the Lowcountry. The two sisters can be seen as scarf ladies in antebellum times or just yesterday in a sunflower field.
In this show English has truly broadened her reach from the days of just watercolor. Viewers are treated to the comparison of skies in pours of transparent watercolor, painted against a red acrylic underpainting, flowing with blended oils or colored pencil washed into paint. Few artists can claim proficiency in such a wide range of media and techniques. English has been more than just proficient in this collection, she has given us something to truly enjoy.
