Smith-Killian Fine Art in Charleston, SC, Offers Exhibit by Three Members of Lowcountry's Artistic Smith Family
Smith-Killian Fine Art in Charleston, SC, is presenting the exhibit, The Smiths: Works in Oil, an exhibition unveiling new paintings by Lowcountry artist Betty Anglin Smith and her twin daughters, Jennifer Smith Rogers and Shannon Smith. The exhibit is on view through Oct. 17, 2007. The culmination of a successful year for this creative trio, the featured works include landscapes, Lowcountry scenes, and downtown rooftops, with each subject interpreted through the unique yet related perspective of the Smith women.
Matriarch Betty Anglin Smith is known for her bold, thick brushstrokes of vibrant color used to capture the beauty of her environment which she sees "everywhere you look as the light intensifies and the shadows deepen." Entranced by the Lowcountry in all its emotive states, Betty finds her primary subject "never boring - it is nature constantly changing, even something as simple as the trees growing at the edge of the marsh." This passion, evident in her lush landscape paintings like Breaking Light and Little Britton Island, has endeared Betty to the Charleston art community as she continues to explore and evolve in her work.
While Shannon's work is diverse in subject matter, from still life to landscapes, her talent in capturing the light is singular. "No matter what I choose to paint," says Shannon, "my goal is to capture the light. Light and shadow can turn a two-dimensional surface into a narrative full of life and energy." Third Cast, from Shannon's Shrimper series, captures the essence of the deeply-rooted southern traditions of her youth and her "appreciation for the symbols of our Lowcountry heritage" that continue to inspire her.
First an architect student and then an artist, Jennifer Smith Rogers combines her two pursuits in paintings of Charleston's historic buildings. Her rooftop pieces now have a following, and she embraces the unusual architectural vistas many overlook such as the birds-eye view of downtown at dusk in Charleston Crescent or the fringe of buildings at the marsh's edge in June's Moon. "The changing light constantly recreates the rooftops and facades to redefine the Charleston we know," she says. Whether morning sun, moonlight, or storefront glow, this light offers constant intrigue as Jennifer depicts its interaction with the surrounding architecture.
Located in the historic French Quarter of downtown Charleston, Smith-Killian Fine Art is known for the contemporary realism and color of Lowcountry painter Betty Anglin Smith and her triplets, painters Jennifer Smith Rogers and Shannon Smith, and photographer Tripp Smith. Bronze sculpture by Darrell Davis, and oil paintings by Kim English, Kevin Beers and Susan Romaine are also featured.
